Vulnerability management

Vulnerability management for operational technology

Syntric helps organisations turn vulnerability information into a manageable program of prioritisation, treatment and ongoing visibility for OT.

Four connected OT infrastructure layers: protected power, networking, compute and cyber security.

Operational context

Prioritise exposure through an operational lens.

Vulnerability management in operational technology is not simply a patching exercise. Assets may be difficult to scan, vendor support may limit available changes, and interruption can carry consequences beyond lost productivity.

Syntric combines technical exposure with asset purpose, network position, compensating controls and operational consequence. That context supports a treatment plan that can include remediation, mitigation, isolation, monitoring or an explicitly managed exception.

01

Contextual priorities

Focus on exposures that matter to the environment rather than treating every finding equally.

02

Practical treatment

Plan remediation or compensating controls around vendor and operational constraints.

03

Ongoing visibility

Track findings, decisions and residual risk as the environment changes.

Service scope

What the work can include.

The final scope is shaped around the operational environment, existing foundation and outcomes the organisation needs to achieve.

01

Asset and exposure context

Relate vulnerability information to asset purpose, ownership and network position.

02

Risk-informed prioritisation

Consider exploitability, exposure, consequence and existing controls together.

03

Treatment planning

Coordinate patching, configuration, isolation or other compensating measures where appropriate.

04

Exception and lifecycle tracking

Keep unresolved constraints, decisions and follow-up actions visible over time.

The managed lifecycle

Designed for the site. Managed for the long run.

  1. 01

    Establish

Build a reliable view of assets, ownership and available vulnerability information.

  2. 02

    Contextualise

Relate findings to exposure, criticality, controls and operational consequence.

  3. 03

    Treat

Plan feasible remediation, mitigation or managed exceptions.

  4. 04

    Reassess

Track changes and revisit priorities as assets and threats evolve.

Common questions

What teams ask about vulnerability management.

Why not rank OT vulnerabilities by severity score alone?

A technical score does not fully describe reachability, asset purpose, existing controls or the operational consequence of change. Those factors help determine a meaningful priority.

What if an OT asset cannot be patched?

The exposure can still be managed. Depending on the environment, options may include configuration changes, segmentation, access restrictions, monitoring, vendor planning or a documented exception.

Is vulnerability management a one-off assessment?

A point-in-time assessment is useful, but assets, software, connectivity and threat information change. An effective program keeps findings and treatment decisions current.
